Set Windows XP to Use Ethernet On Campus

Windows XP requires no configuration to use UOnet's Ethernet connections.

To connect via Ethernet, plug one end of the cable into the Ethernet port in your computer and plug the other end of the cable into the jack on the wall labelled "UO Ethernet."

You can verify that your Ethernet connection works by opening a web browser and loading a web page.

If you have no active Ethernet jack, you can request jack activation through Network Services.

We strongly encourage you to enable the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) that is part of Windows XP. To turn on ICF, follow these directions:

  1. From the Start menu select Settings... then Network Connections and then Local Area Network Connection
  2. Click the Properties button in the window that appears:

  3. Click the "Protect my computer and network..." box under "Internet Connection Firewall" to enable it.
