Have you ever been in a situation where you and your friend(s) want to access the internet but there is only one ethernet port? Well, with Mac's sharing capabilities, you can easily and quickly turn your Macbook into a WiFi hotspot for all to use!

A wi-Fi hotspot is one device, the "hotspot," that broadcasts a wireless network connection that allows nearby devices to access the internet. Similar to a wireless router.

  1. Plug in your macbook to the ethernet and verify you have internet connection
  2. Open up System Preferences and select 'Sharing' under the 'Internet & Network' title.
  3. From there, you'll have a screen to select what kind of sharing you want to start. Click on 'Internet Sharing' but do not check the box quite yet. In order to successfully set up this wireless port, you must do a few things first.
  4. Select that you're sharing the connection from 'ethernet' under the drop down menu.
  5. Select also that you want to share it to computers using 'airport'.
  6. The screen should look similar to this
  7. At this point, you can also name your Wifi hotspot and give it a password for better protection by clicking AirPort Options... If you are on the UO campus, DO NOT name it uowireless or UO Secure.
  8. After this, click OK and enable the Internet Sharing by clicking the check box next to it and select 'Start' when it prompts you to.

That's it! Your friends on both PC and Mac should be able to see this new wireless network and access the internet through your internet sharing!
