Changes to Guest Wireless Sponsorship on Jan. 8

In January 2016, Information Services made improvements to the UO Guest wireless service, which provides wireless network access to UO visitors.

New Guest Wireless Self-Service Option

Information Services is pleased to announce the launch of a guest wireless self-service option on January 8, 2016. This feature allows UO visitors to register themselves for UO Guest wireless access for 7 days at a time. There is no limit to the number of times a guest may self-register.

This new service will provide most visitors with wireless access without involving a sponsor. We hope this will save time and effort for UO employees and improve visitors' wireless Internet experience.
 
Please note that guests with self-registered accounts will not be able to access wireless at UO sports venues (Autzen Stadium, PK Park, Matthew Knight Arena, and Hayward Field). Cellular signal is a great alternative at most of these venues, where the cellular antenna network has been expanded in recent years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I register myself for wireless access?

A: Visitors can now register themselves for 7-day access to UO's wireless network:

  1. On your computer or mobile device, select the UO Guest wireless network.
  2. Select Create an account.
  3. Provide the requested information, then check the box indicating you accept the terms and conditions (UO's Acceptable Use Policy), and click Register.
  4. Click Send password via email and/or Send password via text message. (Note: The system may not acknowledge the button click, but it is sending you the message.)
  5. Once you've received a message containing your password, click Log in.
  6. Enter your assigned username and password. You should then be connected to the UO Guest wireless network.

After the initial registration process, you can use wireless by selecting the UO Guest wireless network on your computer or mobile device and logging in with your assigned username and password, if necessary.

Q: Can I access UO wireless after my self-service account expires?

A: Yes. After your account expires, simply register yourself again. Self-service wireless accounts last for seven days. There is no limit to the number of times you can register yourself.

Q: Can I change the password for my self-service account?

A: No. Passwords cannot be chosen or changed. Each account is assigned a password. If you forget your password, simply register yourself for another account. Please note: If you sign up for a second account before your first account has expired, the new username will consist of your email address with a numeral added onto the end (e.g., "jersmith@uoregon.edu1").

Q: Who are the ideal users of self-service wireless?

A: This service is aimed at UO visitors who are on campus for a short period of time and do not require access to restricted university resources such as library databases. Conference attendees, guest speakers, tourists, and parents and families of UO students and employees are expected to be some of the primary users.

Q: What options will we have for getting guests connected to wireless?

A: As of January 22, we will have two methods for accessing the UO Guest wireless network: guests will be able to register themselves, and UO employees will be able to sponsor guests. The self-registration feature is new. The sponsored wireless option will continue to be offered. Please note, however, that sponsored wireless will be unavailable from January 8 to January 21.

Q: Is the sponsored wireless option being discontinued?

A: No. The ability to sponsor wireless accounts will return on January 22.

Q: Once the self-service option is launched, will UO staff be able to sponsor visitors for wireless access?

A: Yes. The wireless sponsor feature will return on January 22, and UO employees will be able to sponsor guests as they have in the past.

Q: Why are athletic venues excluded from self-service wireless?

A: Our athletic venues, for the most part, have been built out with cellular coverage so that all of our guests can stay in touch during sporting events. Our wireless capacity, however, is not capable of covering all of our guests if they were to use the self-service wireless—that would overwhelm our wireless network. During sporting events, we have police officers, firefighters, members of the media, and others who rely on wireless to provide life and health safety and other critical functions. We are reserving the limited wireless capacity for those with a business need.

Q: Will self-service wireless users be able to access restricted Library databases and other resources?

A: No. As is the case for visitors using sponsored wireless accounts, visitors using self-service wireless are not able to access Library databases that are restricted to UO students, faculty, and staff. These databases are licensed for use only by people directly affiliated with the University of Oregon.
