In previous years, users who have installed the campus McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Client had a choice of being managed or unmanaged. If you chose the managed option, your client would receive the necssary updates from our servers to keep your computer protected from malware. If you chose to be unmanaged, your client is currently only receiving updates from mcafee.com and not receiving the necessary updates from our server that it needs to keep your computer secure from malware.

If you have installed the campus McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) Client on your computer and opted to be unmanaged, you will need to install the management agent. If you choose to remain unmanaged, your VSE client will not receive updates or hotfixes, will be at an increased risk for malware infection, and will not be supported by the Information Services Help Desk.

If you do not know if you are managed or unmanaged, there are two ways to find that information:

First option:

  1. Click on the Start Menu
  2. Click on Control Panel
  3. Click on Programs
  4. Click on Programs and Features
  5. Scroll through the list of programs to find McAfee Agent. If this is installed on your computer, then your machine is probably managed.

Second option:

  1. Open the McAfee VirusScan Console
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Click on Edit Autoupdate Repository List
  4. A list of respositories will open up
  5. If your machine has the following respository, you are managed: ePO_CENTRALEPO
  • If your machine does not meet either of the options, you are probably unmanaged and should proceed with the instructions below.

If you have the VSE client installed on your computer and are unmanaged, please follow these directions to install the McAfee management agent:

  1. Go to McAfee VirusScan
  2. Login with your DuckID and password to view the downloadable links
  3. Download the VirusScan Enterprise for Windows zip file
  4. Right-click on the downloaded file and click Extract All...
  5. Select a destination folder (i.e. the Desktop or Documents folder)
  6. Click Extract
  7. Open the unzipped folder
  8. Open the UO_McAfee_VirusScan_for_Windows folder
  9. Open the Run Frame Pkg.exe First folder
  10. Run the FramePkg installer
  11. The McAfee agent will install
  12. Reboot your computer to finish the installation process

NOTE: Macintosh computers are not currently managed by our servers. This information pertains only to Windows users.
