Introducing the CIO, Dr. Melissa Woo

Dr. Melissa Woo, the university's new CIO and Vice-Provost for Information Services, took control of the wheel on September 3, 2012. Her first day on campus was Tuesday, September 4.

Woo comes to Eugene from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). Her career in higher education has taken her to Berkeley and Champaign, Illinois, where she earned a bachelor's degree and a doctorate in Biophysics (respectively). She began her information technology career in Champaign at University of Illinois (UIUC), where she first worked as a Linux and UNIX systems administrator, then quickly moved into the role of managing a seventeen-person team. Later at UIUC, she served as Assistant Director of systems and operations.

In 2008, Woo was hired by UWM as the Director of Research Cyberinfrastructure. Since then, she worked as Acting Chief Operating Officer and then as Director of University Information Technology Services at UWM. As a director, Woo provided leadership and oversight of campus-wide email and student information services, data center infrastructure and operations, identity and access management, system administration, networking and telecommunications.

An active member of EDUCAUSE, Woo is a graduate of the Frye Leadership Institute and the EDUCAUSE Management Program. She currently chairs the Advisory Group on Enterprise Information Systems and Services and also serves on the EDUCAUSE 2012 Program Committee.
