Disabling Java Automatic Updates for Windows XP

By default when Java is installed, automatic updates are turned on and will download any new version of Java that is released. This can cause problems with Singularity due to incompatibilities with newer Java versions. Turning automatic updates off is an important step in making sure your computer works as expected with Singularity. The following PDF will guide you through the process. If you are not sure if your Java automatic updates are on, use the guide to verify you have them turned off.

Compatibility Issues with Java 1.6

Java recently (April 2007) released an update through automatic updates that is incompatible with the current version of Singularity. This update will cause certain functions in the website to malfunction, such as being able to view a second page of a document or printing from the MyDocCart. If this update has been installed, it is important that you take the following steps to remove the update.

  1. Click on the “Start” button on the lower left of your screen
  2. Click on the “Control Panel” button (you may need to click on “Settings” first depending on your setup)
  3. Double click on the “Add or Remove Programs” icon
  4. Locate in the list of programs “Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1” and click on it
  5. Click on the “Remove” button
  6. Click “Yes” that you are sure you want to remove it
  7. Wait for the uninstaller to finish. You should then get the program list without this update in it
  8. Close the “Add or Remove Programs” and the “Control Panel”

After removing this update, follow this guide, Disabling Java Automatic Updates for Windows XP Guide (PDF) to turn off automatic updates. You will need to close the control panel and then open it again after uninstalling before you can turn off the automatic updates.

Compatibility issues with Singularity 6 and Windows Vista

  • Java JRE 1.6

Microsoft's Windows Vista Operating System comes pre-installed with Sun's Java JRE version 1.6. This version is currently unsupported by Singularity and will have adverse affects if used. There are many functions that will not work expectedly or even at all if JRE 1.6 is enabled.

To solve this issue, do the following:

  • Install the Java JRE from the top link on the login page on the Singularity website
  • Navigate to the Control Panel, choose Additional Options then Java unless you have changed to the Classic View in which case you can go straight to Java
  • Within the Java Control Panel, select the Java tab and then click on the bottom View button which is under Java Application Runtime Settings
  • A new box should appear and should have two rows shown, one with JRE 1.6 and one with JRE 1.5. Uncheck the JRE 1.6 checkbox and make sure the JRE 1.5 checkbox is checked. Then click on the System tab and uncheck the JRE 1.6 checkbox
  • Click OK, closing the box and then click Apply and then OK to close the Java Control Panel
