Product Information

Respondus is a powerful tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to various learning management systems (LMSes), such as Canvas.  Exams can be created offline using a familiar Windows environment, or moved from one LMS to another. 

  • Authoring Features
    • Distinct user environments (called "personalities") for Canvas
    • Create exams and assessments offline using a Windows interface
    • Supports up to 15 question types, including calculated and algorithmic formats
    • Import questions from MS Word (including embedded images), rich-text, QTI, and tab/comma delimited formats
    • Access to thousands of Respondus-compatible publisher test banks -- Free to instructors who adopt a participating textbook
  • Preview, Publish and Printing Features
    • Preview questions before publishing them to the LMS
    • Publish exams and assessments directly to an online course (media files are automatically uploaded)
    • A "batch publish" feature allows assessments and surveys to be published to multiple courses is a single step
    • Determine point values and exam settings offline
    • Print exams/surveys directly from Respondus, or save files to MS Word or a rich-text format
  • Retrieval and Reporting Features
    • Retrtieve exams from the leading learning platforms, complete with media files (?)
    • Archive and restore exam/survey projects (including media content) with one click -- ideal for providing a colleague with a ready-to-use exam
  • System Requirements
    • Operating System - Windows 7, Vista, XP
    • Memory - 32 MB RAM minimum
    • Hard Disk Space - 10 MB of free hard disk space for program files
    • Monitor - 1024x768 or 1280x720 minimum resolution

Obtaining Software

Respondus renews annually in July.  For access to the Respondus software, see instructions under "Software Available for Download".   Also provided, in a separate file, is the password information that must be entered each time the Respondus sofware is installed.

  • Quick Start Guides with essential information for getting started with Respondus can be found at  http://www.respondus.com/quickstart
  • All support questions from faculty and gtf's must initially be directed to CMET Consulting, Library, (541-346-1942)
  • Your software will not work unless you make sure to download the 4.0.7.00 update patch file below in the "Software Available for Download" section in conjunction with the "Respondus4Campus" main file. Start the installer for the main file and finish that process before applying the patch file.

Please note that Respondus does not currently run on Macintosh computers but does run on virtual machines with full versions of Windows under VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop for Macintosh and with Windows on Apple Boot Camp.

Licensing and Restrictions

  • The Respondus Campus-wide license permits unlimited use of the Respondus software at the University of Oregon
  • A copy of Respondus software can be installed on your home computer
  • Note:  You are not permitted to provide the Respondus software or the password information to anyone who is not affiliated with the University of Oregon.  Such an action is a violation of our licensing agreement with Respondus and is also illegal.
  • This is an annually renewing license that expires July 31st of each year.
